Today the new Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, George Tuccaro, visited the school along with various other representatives of the territorial government. They brought the ceremonial mace of the Legislative Assembly and gave a short presentation explaining how the government works and the role of the mace.
The mace itself is beautiful. Anchored on a stylized narwhal tusk this current incarnation was made in 1999 and features elements from across the NWT. Among other things there are stones from Sahtu (at more than 4 billion years old, some of the oldest on the planet), carvings in marble pulled from Great Slave Lake, Dene beadwork, and a crown topped by a diamond from the Ekati mine.
